A new performance by Albany Park Theater Project

A Message from Steph Paul,
APTP Resident Director

Dear APTP Family,

For two weeks in May, two dozen APTP artists, separated by stay-at-home orders, rehearsed, created and filmed a performance of a new work: Canción para un Sueño.

Canción para un Sueño emerged from a song featured in APTP's Amor de Lejos (2003), a play inspired by interviews of immigrant day laborers from Central America.

The making of Canción para un Sueño allowed us to revisit our past and build upon it with our present. Distance can often complicate collaboration, but - fueled by a deep desire to connect and create - our 2020 team used their bodies, voices and instruments to reach each other and transcend barriers.

The coming together of this community gave us the energy to do the work.

The affirmation and amplification of immigrant bravery, struggle, resiliency and truth grounded our journey from start to finish.

Making this work was not void of challenges. Our creative process necessitated new approaches to artistic and technical collaboration.  In addition to being artistic collaborators and performers, APTP youth were also their own:
  • Camera
  • Lighting
  • AND!
  • Audio crew

(Mind you, the APTP adults are still trying to figure out how to master Zoom in our staff meetings.)

The work was not easy but they persevered.

This generation can truly do it all.

We invite you to join us and experience Canción para un Sueño. We hope you enjoy.

With gratitude,
Steph
