Hello! ¡Hola!
My name is Richard Aszling. I am proud to be entering my second decade serving our wonderfully diverse learners in our wonderfully diverse community. This year (School Year 2023–2024) will be my 12th year teaching in Chicago Public Schools and my 11th year teaching at Alessandro Volta Elementary. At this point in my career at Volta, aside from serving as Case Manager for the Special Education Department for two and half years, I have worked with every grade level from Kindergarten to 8th grade in both the Dual-language and English-only instructional programs. This year, I will be working with the dual-language classrooms in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade (102, 203, 211, and 213), many of the students in which I first came to know when they were in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade!
I was born and raised in Chicago, and I attended Chicago Public Schools from Kindergarten through 12th grade (Franklin Fine Arts Center, K–6; and Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, 7–12). I grew up in Portage Park, just west of Albany Park. I graduated from college in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in Music Composition from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. Before becoming a teacher, I worked at an afterschool program in Lakeview, as a private music teacher, and as a financial aid administrator at Northwestern College. I became a teacher in 2012 as a Chicago Teaching Fellow, and in 2019, I finished my master's degree in Special Education and School Leadership with the PLUS Scholarship Program (Preparing Leaders in Urban Special education) at the University of Illinois Chicago, and earned my Learning/Behavior Specialist II certification in Curriculum Adaptation. I also studied music composition at DePaul University and Bilingual Education (Spanish) and English as a Second Language at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois.
I live with my wife and two sons, with whom I enjoy spending time and traveling. I also enjoy playing and writing music, studying languages, and riding (bi- and motor-)cycles.

Me llamo Richard Aszling. Tengo el gran orgullo de empezar mi segunda década de servir a nuestras maravillosos estudiantes diversos en nuestra maravillosa comunidad diversa. Este año escolar (2023–2024) va a ser mi 12º año de enseñar en las escuelas públicas de Chicago y mi 11º año de enseñar en la escuela Volta. En este punto de mi carrera en Volta, además de desempeñarme como administrador de casos para el departamento de educación especial por dos años y medio, he trabajado con cada grado del Kinder hasta 8º en ambos programas de estudios (el programa dual y el programa de inglés). Este año, voy a trabajar con los salones del 3º, 4º, y 5º grado del programa dual (102, 203, 211, y 213), ¡muchos de los alumnos de los cual conocí por primera vez cuando eran en 1º, 2º, y 3º grado!
Nací y crecí en Chicago, y asistí a escualas públicas de Chicago del Kinder hasta el fin de la high school (Franklin Fine Arts Center, K–6; y Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, 7–12). Me crié en Portage Park, justo al oeste de Albany Park. Me gradué de la universidad en 2005 con licenciatura en la composición de música de Oberlin College en Oberlin, Ohio. Antes de hacerme maestro, trabajé en un programa extraescolar, como maestro personal de música, y como administrador de ayuda financiera en Northwestern College. Me hice maestro en 2012 como miembro del programa Chicago Teaching Fellows, y en 2019, me gradué con mi maestría en educación especial y liderazgo en escuelas como recipiente de la beca PLUS (Preparing Leaders in Urban Special education; o sea preparando líderes en la educación especial urbana) de la universidad de Illinois Chicago, y conseguí mi certificación de Learning/Behavior Specialist II (o sea especialista de aprendizaje y comportamiento, 2º nivel) en la adaptación de currículo. También estudié la composición de música en la universidad de DePaul, y la educación bilingüe (español) y inglés como segunda lengua en la universidad Dominicana en River Forest, Illinois.
Vivo con mi esposa y nuestros dos hijos, con quienes me gusta pasar el tiempo y viajar. También me gusta tocar y escribir música, estudiar idiomas, y montar a (bi- y moto-)cicletas.
