Mi nombre es Alejandrina Segovia y soy maestra de 5to grado del programa dual. Mi tierra natal es Zacatecas, México y llegue a este país a la edad de nueve años. Mis primeros años escolares en Chicago fueron en la escuala privada, Our Lady Help of Christians, luego en la Escuela Elemental Hibbard. Después me gradué de la secundaria Von Steuben. Posteriormente, estudié contabilidad en la Universidad de Illinois de Chicago, pero años más tarde cambié de rama y obtuve mi primera Licenciatura en Psicología con una subconcentracion en Español en la Universidad Northeastern de Illinois. Al mismo tiempo, trabajé por cinco años como asistente en el programa de Educación Especial en Volta y fue en este tiempo que me di cuenta lo que sería mi verdadera vocación. Durante este tiempo, observé y aprendí muchas estrategias de enseñanza de excelentes educadores de Educación Especial y me di cuenta que disfrutaba mucho ayudar a los estudiantes de 4to, 5to, 6to, 7mo y 8vo grado a lograr sus metas académicas. Entonces me fue ofrecida y acepte felizmente una posición como Maestra Bilingüe en Volta mientras también completaba una Maestría en Educación, una Certificacion de Maestra Elemental y una Certificación en Enseñanza de Inglés como Segundo Idioma (ESL) en la Universidad Northern Illinois.
Este año cumplo 29 años como educadora en Volta incluidos trece años en el programa dual. Para mi, es un honor servir a la juventud de Albany Park, una comunidad tan diversa como cuando llegué a vivir aquí con mi familia hace 46 años.
Mi tiempo libre lo dedico a visitar/cuidar a mi mama y convivir/pasear con mis cinco hermanas y sus hijos. También, me gusta el arte, caminar, leer y bailar. Cuando se me es posible me gusta viajar a diferentes partes de mi país natal y otros lugares del mundo ya que me encanta conocer nuevas culturas, su gente y tradiciones.

Dear Families,
My name is Alejandrina Segovia and I teach 5th grade dual language. I was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and I arrived to this country at the age of nine. My first Chicago school experiences were in a private school, Our Lady Help of Christians, and Hibbard Elementary School. I graduated from Von Steuben High School. I began my college journey in accounting at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) but later changed fields and completed a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish at Northeastern University of Illinois. While I completed my psychology courses, I worked for five years as a teacher assistant in the Special Education Department at Volta, and it was here where I found my true calling. While I observed and learned many teaching strategies from excellent Special Ed teachers, I discovered that I enjoyed very much assisting and servicing students from 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to reach their academic goals. Then, I was offered a bilingual teaching position and I happily accepted it while I also dedicated my time in completing a Master's Degree in Education, a Teacher Certification, and an Endorsement in ESL at Northern Illinois University.
This year is my 29th year serving as an educator at Volta, including 13 years in the Dual Language program. It is truly an honor to serve the youth at Albany Park, a community as diverse as when I and my family first settled here 46 years ago.
In my spare time, I enjoy visiting and taking care of my mom. I like to go out with my five sisters and their children. I also like art, walking, reading, and dancing. When possible, I like to visit different places in my native country and other places around the world. I love to find out about other cultures, their people and traditions.
