4th Grade Teacher
WELCOME!
Welcome to my page! My name is Rosa Félix. This is my first year teaching at Alessandro Volta Elementary School, and I am looking forward to an amazing school year in 2023-24.
I was originally born in the Dominican Republic, but my family eventually immigrated to New York City, where I spent the majority of my childhood. I am fluent in Spanish, and I enjoy reading, traveling and learning about different cultures. I also love to spend time with my family including my Chihuahua, Magdalena.
Shortly after graduating from Cornell University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, I moved to Chicago. My major in Sociology and coursework in early childhood development were influential in setting the direction of my professional pursuits. After initially working with preschoolers in Chicago, I continued to pursue my educational goals and interests in working with children when I applied to Columbia College’s Urban Teaching Program. This program was instrumental in honing and refining my skills as an educator, and it led to my teaching elementary school children ages five to ten in Chicago Public Schools for over fifteen years.
My life experiences and prior work educating children have had a profound effect on my views of what constitutes “effective teaching.” I believe effective teachers provide guidance and help support a child’s educational and developmental growth. In addition, I believe that a child-centered classroom environment nurtures curiosity, motivates children to learn through discovery and play, and encourages children to experience new challenges that will help them build confidence. My goal is to provide such an environment for my students within Volta.
