Volta Bilingual Department

The goal of our transitional bilingual education model is to develop academic skills in the student's native language and English while the student attains English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing throughout the content areas.

The goal of our dual language program is for students to become academically bilingual and bi-literate in English and Spanish, while attaining high levels of academic success, becoming multi-culturally competent, and qualifying for the Illinois Pathway to the Seal of Bi-literacy.

Philosophy on Language: Volta School is an extremely diverse school with over 23 languages being spoken by the students, families, and staff. As teachers, we encourage students to continue reading, writing, and speaking in their native language. To foster, this growth students can check our bilingual books in many different languages right here at Volta in our resource rooms- Gujarati (105), Arabic (209), and in our school library (208). At Volta,  culture and language play a very important role in our teaching. Even classroom teachers use novels or read-aloud embedding different cultures. Just ask your children about the different themes they are exploring in their classrooms!
